Last year, four of Britain’s top five tourist attractions were outdoor venues.
Windsor Great Park, No. 1 with 5.4 million visitors, had never even made the top 10 before.
The only indoor attraction in the top five was the London Natural History Museum at No. 4. Figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions show that 67.8 million people visited its sites last year.
That’s up 25% year-on-year, but down 57% from pre-Covid 2019.
And ALVA warned that a drop in overall numbers was leaving landmarks such as Westminster Abbey, Stonehenge and St Paul’s Cathedral struggling.
Director Bernard Donoghue said: “In a normal year they are largely dependent on foreign visitors, who don’t come.
“These organizations… won’t repair their balance sheets for two or three years.”
