AEW World Title Match Set, New WWE Champions, NXT Changes, More – TJR Wrestling

Welcome back, TJR readers! Did you spend all day Friday reminiscing about your former monarch and missing out on WWE Smackdown? Maybe you spent all day Monday adding the two-time AEW World Champion to your resume and missed Raw?

Don’t worry because I’m back with another edition of Top Ten Wrestling Stories of the Week.

10. Edge Brutally Attacked By Judgment Day

Looks like Edge is going on vacation for a bit. Last Monday on Raw, Edge faced Dominik Mysterio in the show’s main event. Edge seemed to be in control of the match, when Dominik’s father Rey suddenly got involved and begged Edge to stop the attack. This led to Damien Priest attacking Rey at ringside, while Finn Bálor attacked Edge, causing the disqualification. The Judgment Day then attacked Edge’s left leg with a chair, with the band standing on top of Edge to end the show. It was reported by WWE that Edge suffered a “grade 2 MCL sprain”. All of this should lead to Edge taking a few weeks off with his family, and he didn’t even have to bite a frame to get it. (TJRW Restling)

9. Karrion Kross chokes Drew McIntyre

It was not a good week for Drew McIntyre. Last Friday on Smackdown, McIntyre faced Solo Sikoa in the main event. Sikoa had just cost McIntyre the Universal Championship days prior at Clash at the Castle. It appeared that McIntyre would get his revenge on Sikoa when suddenly Karrion Kross came to the ring and applied the Kross Jacket Choke on McIntyre to cause the disqualification. Kross would then continue to choke McIntyre as the screen went to black and white and then completely black to end the show. It is currently unknown that Kross turning the screen to black and white means he is the newest member of the NWO. (TJRW Restling)

8. Roman Reigns goes 1000 days without being pinned

It’s been a very long time since anyone pinned Roman Reigns. Last Saturday commemorated 1,000 days since Reigns was pinned or submitted in a wrestling match. Remarkably, the last time Reigns was pinned in a match was against King Corbin at TLC in 2019. Going 1000 days straight doing anything is a remarkable accomplishment, because the last time I did, I was in college. (TJRW Restling)

7. Ronda Rousey will challenge Liv Morgan to extreme WWE rules

Ronda Rousey will once again have the opportunity to take over the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship. Last Friday on Smackdown, Rousey defeated Xia Li, Sonya Deville, Natalya and Lacey Evans in a Fatal-5-Way Elimination Match to earn another shot at Liv Morgan and the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Morgan initially cashed in the Women’s Money in the Bank Briefcase to defeat Rousey for the championship. Morgan would then controversially defeat Rousey the following month at SummerSlam as well. Later on SmackDown LowDown, Rousey challenged Morgan to an Extreme Rules match before calling her “Hooters Barbie”. Interestingly, Liv Morgan was actually a Hooters Girl before joining WWE, but has yet to use a chicken wing in a match. (TJRW Restling)

6. Another faction introduced in AEW

Since Tony Khan had no titles or tournaments to announce this week, it was time to introduce a new faction. Last Wednesday on Dynamite, MJF did an in-ring promo where he announced he had a faction “in restraint.” MJF then featured Stokely Hathaway, who dated W. Morrissey, Ethan Page, Lee Moriarty and The Gunn Club. Hathaway announced that his new faction will be known as The Firm and will be MJF’s support system until MJF no longer needs them. It is unknown if Jonathan Gresham was considered for the band, and if they also considered calling the band “A Time to Kill” or “The Pelican Brief”. (TJRW Restling)

5. Solo Sikoa wins the NXT North American Championship

Solo Sikoa can’t be done with NXT after all. Last week on NXT 2.0, Sikoa made a shocking appearance to challenge Carmelo Hayes for the NXT North American Championship. In the end, Sikoa was able to hit a Flying Solo splash off the top rope, to take the win and the title. Sikoa just made his main roster debut for Clash at the Castle on September 3 and officially joined the Bloodline last Friday on Smackdown. Upon learning that the NXT North American Championship could be defended on Smackdown, Tony Khan immediately called Triple H to see if he could defend it on Dynamite as well. (TJRW Restling)

4. WWE is making changes to NXT

NXT returns to a familiar look. Last Tuesday night, WWE’s social media account shared a video of the colorful NXT 2.0 logo transforming into the new white, black and gold logo for NXT, notably without any mention of “2.0”. The black and gold color scheme would not be the only thing that will return. It was also reported this week that the Halloween Havoc event scheduled for October 22 will now be a Takeover event. Triple H is clearly trying to restore NXT to what it created, as he hopes to have found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. (TJRW Restling)

3. Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson will face off for the AEW World Championship

AEW is about to take another shot at crowning a world champion. Last week on Dynamite, the AEW World Championship Tournament Semi-Final matches took place. In the first match, Jon Moxley was able to defeat Sammy Guevara to advance to the final. Then in the main event of the evening, Bryan Danielson was able to beat Chris Jericho to qualify as well. Danielson and Moxley will now face off this Wednesday at the AEW Grand Slam from Arthur Ashe Stadium. 44 US Open tennis tournaments have been played at Arthur Ashe, interestingly, that’s 10 fewer tournaments than AEW. (TJRW Restling)

2. Dakota Kai and IYO SKY win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships

Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah’s WWE Women’s Tag Team Title reign ended up being short-lived. Last Monday on Raw, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY defeated Rodriguez and Aliyah to win the titles. Rodriguez and Aliyah had just won the titles two weeks earlier, defeating SKY and Kai in the WWE Women’s Tag Team Title Tournament Finals. Obviously, WWE decided the wrong team won the tournament and decided to do some CTRL damage. (TJRW Restling)

1. The AEW Grand Slam will take place this Wednesday evening

Next Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite promises to be one of the biggest of the year. Dynamite will be held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, which has a capacity of over 20,000. So far, four major title matches have been announced, including PAC defending the AEW All-Atlantic Championship against Orange Cassidy. The Acclaimed will once again attempt to win the AEW World Tag Team Championships from Swerve in Our Glory. Toni Storm will defend the AEW Women’s Championship in a four-way match against Serena Deeb, Athena, and Dr. Britt Baker. Finally, a new champion will be crowned when Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley face off for the vacant AEW World Championship. In particular, no media scrum is planned after the event. (TJRW Restling)

This concludes another edition of the top ten wrestling stories of the week. Thank you for taking the time to read this each week. Although I often joke, I recently started officiating with NYCW and FCWA, and I respect what wrestlers do every week more than ever. I wrote an article about all that here. If you like what I do, even though my jokes are almost as bad as the Velveteen Dream in your bathroom. So follow me on Twitter @Fowlerwrestlin1
