A Marvel Fan’s Guide to Hungary

Ever since Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) mentioned “what happened in Budapest,” many Marvel and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans have been wondering what’s wrong. so special in Budapest. The answer is: it’s cheap. Aware of this, Marvel has shot several movies and TV series in Hungary. And the best part is that you can visit all these places for free. If you want to walk the roads Oscar Isaac walked, eat the snacks Scarlett Johansson ate, and breathe the air Florence Pugh breathed, you have to visit all of these places.

  1. Kossuth Lajos Square, Budapest, Hungary

Marvel Studios / Black Widow

Remember that iconic scene from Black Widow where Natasha Romanoff turned out to be the worst driver ever? The Hungarian guy whose car wrecked certainly does. The whole shot of the scene where Yelena (Natasha and Black Widow’s adoptive sister) and Natasha were running away from the other Black Widows was shot on this street in Budapest. Although it can be hard to get a bird’s eye view of this place, driving/biking/walking/rolling down this street can make you feel like you’re part of the movie. It also has a beautiful view of the Danube and the classical architecture of Hungary.

Right there, you can also find the magnificent Hungarian Parliament – which is a monument that anyone traveling to Budapest must visit. However, it is best to visit it after dark to see the warm and magical lights that surround this place.

4. Feco Büfé, Etyek, Hungary

Marvel Studios / Black Widow

After one of the biggest fight scenes in central Budapest, Yelena and Natasha stop for gas and snacks as they prepare for their journey to find the location of the Black Widow program. Plus, Yelena’s signature rant about Natasha’s superhero landing pose was filmed at the gas station right next to the buffet. They quickly eat a meal at this buffet and make up for it. This buffet on the outskirts of Budapest served as a place where Yelena and Natasha were able to reconnect after 21 years.

Here they had the chance to talk about their past and their future over a glass of beer. You can also enjoy a nice evening at this place, just like the characters. Besides the Marvel Cinematic Universe craze, the buffet has highly acclaimed reviews and serves Hungarian cuisine. It’s also quite a nice place to take pictures as it has a typical Hungarian rustic vibe.

3. Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungary

Marvel Studios / Moon Knight

This has to be included in the top 5 shocking betrayals of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The British Museum where Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) is supposed to work moon knight is the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts. This museum actually holds the largest collection of ancient Egyptian art in Europe. Apart from what is depicted in the series, there are many works of art that will also leave you breathless. Some of them include the art of Leonardo da Vinci, Goya and Rembrandt. But beware, an Egyptian demon dog (Anubis’ Egyptian jackal) might chase you in the middle of the night if you decide to stay.

As a bonus: the streets of London in Moon Knight were also in Budapest. Now that’s another surprise – a good one though – since you can visit these streets without being caught up in the stuffy, chaotic streets of London! The place where Steven entered while leaving his house was filmed in Anker Köz, in District VI. This location is close to Király Utca which is a tourist hub with its commercial area and its proximity to St. Stephen’s Basilica, another important historical monument that you must see.

  1. The main square, Szentendre, Hungary

Marvel Studios / Moon Knight

Guess what? The “German city” of moon knight isn’t in Germany either – the scene was filmed in a very touristy Hungarian town. I personally went there last summer and I assure you that there are no cult activities in this very cute and colorful city. Besides enjoying the view of where Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) tried and murdered several people, you can try delicious flavors of homemade ice cream at Lavender Ice Cream Parlour. Among the historical monuments around the town, the beach is also a popular destination when visiting Szentendre. It is about 45 minutes by train from Budapest, so you must also visit this city during your stay in Hungary.

  1. Keleti Pályaudvar, Budapest, Hungary

One of the most beautiful train stations in the world is in Budapest and is called Keleti Pályaudvar. There’s a reason the trailer for ‘Black Widow’ includes Scarlet Johansson herself arriving at this station. Well, maybe I’m biased because I was going to this station every day to get to Budapest for a month straight. Each time I was impressed by the intricate ceiling, the clock at the entrance and the different types of trains. Every time you take a train from this station, it can be a surprise: a Soviet-era train, a modern fast train or even a typical Hungarian MAV train could take you to your destination. The whole station is historic and beautiful in the way it was designed.

All in all, while Hungary is the perfect country (read: cheap and aesthetically pleasing) for MCU fans, don’t forget to immerse yourself in the culture. There is a lot to see and a lot of cultural activities to do. Maybe try filming your own story… Be your own Natasha Romanoff or Yelena Baldova or Marc/Steven/Jake.
